Ang Patt Meng Café , 97 Jl Petaling, Chinatown. Typical cheap Chinese café, serving morning noodles and, after midday, nasi campur with meat, fish and vegetable dishes.

Bilal Restaurant , 33 Jl Ampang. At the city-centre end of Jl Ampang, this north Indian restaurant is particularly popular for its chicken and mutton curries. About RM20 for two.

Central Market , 1st and 2nd Floors, Jl Hang Kasturi. Best are the superb Malay stalls on the top floor where plates of nasi campur cost just RM2.

Hameeds Café , Ground Floor, Central Market, Jl Hang Kasturi, Chinatown. Superb, busy, north Indian café serving tandoori chicken, curries and rice dishes.

Hamid Shah Café , 30 Jl Silang, Chinatown. Excellent, busy café for Malay and North Indian curries and roti. Very good value at around RM10-12 for two. Open 8am-6pm.

Lakshmi Villas , Lebuh Ampang, Little India. On the edge of Chinatown, this is the best south Indian café in KL. The ground floor serves various delicious dosais; the first floor specializes in banana-leaf curries, a bargain at around RM6 for two. Daily 7am-7pm.

Restoran Santa , 7 Jl Tun HS Lee (Little India end). Nicknamed the "chapati house", a lively place, best at midday to mid-afternoon, with delicious chapatis and curries for around RM5.

Seng Kee Restaurant , 100 Jl Petaling, Chinatown. Frenetically busy restaurant with great prawn and duck dishes; well priced at around RM25 for two.

Wan Fo Yuan Vegetarian Restaurant , Jl Panggong, Chinatown. The area's best-known vegetarian restaurant serving excellent tofu and vegetable dishes.
