Tokyo Buses. Although Tokyo's buses are handy for crossing the few areas without convenient subway and train stations, none of the buses or routes are labelled in English, so you'll have to get used to recognizing the kanji names of places or memorizing the numbers of useful bus routes. The final destination is on the front of the bus, along with the route number. You pay on entry, by dropping the flat rate of ¥200 into the fare box by the driver. There is a machine in the box for changing notes. A recorded voice announces the next stop in advance, as well as issuing constant warnings about not forgetting your belongings when you get off the bus. If you're not sure when your stop is, ask your fellow passengers. The Transport Bureau of Tokyo Metropolitan Government issues a useful English pamphlet and map of all the bus routes; pick one up from the TMGB in Shinjuku or one of the TICs .
